Could Calvin Klein or Giorgio Armani or Donatella Versace make even halfway decent movies? How about Tommy Hilfiger? Pierre Cardin? Karl Lagerfeld? Tommy Bahama? Diana Old Navy? Pasquale De Gap? Can any of these fashion trend setting and/or clothes selling behemoths make anything visually accomplished outside of 30-second television commercials and various styles of outerwear? Because this guy Tom Ford decided he could and in 2009 made his own little movie called “A Single Man,” and guess what? It’s a little better than halfway decent, that’s for sure.
“A Single Man” is a gorgeous movie in many ways, and at the center of it all is a well regarded and very accomplished performance from good ole reliable Colin Firth as depressed man in 1962 Southern California, so crushed by the untimely death of his lover and partner that he decides this is the day he’s going to kill himself, and this movie takes place over that day, and wouldn’t you know it, he takes stock of his life and spends time with people he loves and meets new people and maybe he has a change of heart? After all, in the end, the heart makes the decisions, sometimes to deadly results. This is a great looking movie and made with much attention to detail. The use of color is important, as the few times when the main character is reminded of why life is worth living, the world around him comes to life in more saturated colors.
Just sit back and enjoy this interesting love story on the Netflix Instant and marvel at how wonderful it all looks.
