In 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman was the lead in what would turn out to be one of the last films of his frustratingly shortened career, and it also turned out to be one of his finer performances.
In “A Most Wanted Man,” we get a wonderfully disheveled and world weary Hoffman as a German intelligence officer tasked with making inroads in the battle against Islamic-based terrorism, and it is a pleasure to watch him navigate the tricky waters of international espionage and global terrorism.
It also helps that Hoffman is joined by the likes of Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright and Daniel Bruhl, all of them doing great work. And acclaimed music video director and photographer Anton Corbijn led the way with sure handed, steady direction, and it is all based on a John le CarrĂ© novel, and between this and previous Netflix POTW “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” I don’t know why every novel by le CarrĂ© isn’t being made into a movie right now because these twisty plots and suspense filled stories make for great films, especially when populated with great actors and given to strong directors. “A Most Wanted Man” is a most excellent movie, a great addition to the great spy films of all time.
